It seems like in 2018, going organic is what everyone is doing. But what exactly can do you do about dental care products? As more and more people try to be healthy and remove harmful chemicals from their lives, organic products are popping up all over the place, and dentistry is no different. Today, Exceptional Dentistry is discussing organic toothpaste and whether or not your family should be considering the switch.
Although many people believe “natural” and “organic” are the same thing and use them interchangeably, they are actually very different, especially in the United States. Natural products actually have no official definition and are unregulated. Organic products, however, are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture through the National Organic Program. Certified organic products receive a “USDA Organic” seal of approval.
When it comes to selecting products, many consumers are opting for products that are free of artificial chemicals, additives, flavors, and colors. Toothpaste often contains fluoride, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and other chemicals. Certain companies even test their products on animals, which same may wish to avoid. Selecting an organic toothpaste can help to ensure your family is exposed to fewer chemicals during their at-home dental care routine.
When it comes to cleaning teeth, the toothbrush actually tends to do most of the “cleaning”, removing debris, plaque, and tartar from the smile. Chemicals in toothpaste are often used to kill bacteria and freshen the breath, however, many herbs and essential oils found in “organic” toothpaste also have antibacterial properties themselves.
If you aren’t sure which organic toothpaste to select, we recommend looking for an American Dental Association seal of approval, ensuring the product has been tested and approved by dentists.
