Benefits of Denture Implants
Denture stabilization with denture implants can improve many areas of your life, including:
- It will dramatically enhance your ability to chew food properly, thus promoting better digestion.
- Far more comfortable than traditional dentures.
- Much easier to clean, it will be like having your natural teeth again, you just continue to brush and floss.
- An elimination of any mouth sores and gum infection.
- It improves your ability to speak normally, since the dentures will not be slipping and shifting.
- They provide a permanent solution to your missing teeth.
The Disadvantages of Traditional Dentures
Conventional dentures have long been the traditional method of replacing a full arch of missing teeth and until the recent innovative technological enhancements they were the only viable option. Dentures have many disadvantages which make them a less-than-ideal restoration solution. Traditional dentures will often slip out of place, make unnatural noises when you speak or eat, create painful chewing sores, and provide as little as 10 percent of your natural chewing power.
Wearing traditional dentures also accelerates jawbone atrophy. This bone loss causes the dentures to become loose repeatedly, resulting in the need for numerous relines and refits. This can eventually reach a point where no denture can be made to fit properly.
Under certain circumstances, the team at Exceptional Dentistry can use dental implants to help your current denture remain securely in place and increase its chewing power. Placing implants and retrofitting your existing denture is known as denture stabilization.
With your dentures now stabilized with dental implants, all the inconvenience and discomfort of loose traditional dentures are a thing of the past.

How Do Denture Implants Work?
Denture stabilization is a process of having denture implants surgically placed in the jawbone to attach to the dentures to stabilize and secure them on the arch. Regular dentures sit on top of the gum and are held in place with an adhesive. There is no rooted support. You may not have teeth in the arch, but you have enough bone mass in the jaw to adequately support the implant. By implanting this artificial root into the jawbone, it also helps prevent any further bone loss. Your dentures are firmly attached and secured to an artificial root providing the benefits of that root. The process includes attachments on the underside of the dentures that are clipped onto attachments on the implants. You may also prefer to have a procedure where there is a fixed crown or bridgework to gain a more permanent result. These stabilized dentures cannot be removed at all, while the ones with attachments are removable.
After the dental implant supported denture treatment is completed, your dentures will be secured on your arch, and they will be far more comfortable to wear. There will be a noticeable increase in chewing power along with the ability to eat some of your favorite foods again. The implants deliver biting and chewing pressures as well as even temperature changes, much like a natural root, delivering a natural experience.
Types of Stabilized Dentures
There are two distinct types of denture stabilizations offered at Exceptional Dentistry: ball-retained and bar-retained dentures.
- Ball-retained dentures- are also referred to as stud-attachment dentures. For this version, the implants in the jawbone have metal attachments on the top of them that are used to match up to attachments on the dentures. The implant attachments are most often in the shape of a ball and the denture attachments are more like sockets. Therefore, the ball fits snuggly into the socket.
- Bar-retained dentures- this type requires at least two to five implants in your jawbone. A metal bar matching the curve of your arch is then attached to all these implants. The denture sits firmly over the bar, and the implants or dentures or both have attachments on them to help clip and secure the appliance to the bar.
