A dental bridge is a fixed and permanent restoration that will replace a missing tooth or several teeth. The appliance is composed of several components that are fused together to fill the gap where your tooth or teeth are missing. Dental bridges accurately bridge the gap between two teeth. A dental bridge supports an artificial crown called a pontic which is held in place by the abutment teeth on both sides of the gap. Although artificial crowns can be fabricated from a variety of materials, they are most often made from porcelain to best match your natural teeth.

Replacing one or a few missing teeth can be easily achieved with a dental bridge. If you are currently missing teeth, you may feel self-conscious about your appearance, but missing teeth impact more than your smile. Health issues will arise from a missing tooth, which can include more tooth loss, decay, and more. Your remaining natural teeth will quickly shift into the open gap affecting your alignment, and the gums and any surrounding tissue will become more susceptible to both disease and decay.

Is a Dental Bridge Right for You?

Some factors that make you a viable candidate for a dental bridge include:

  • Missing one or even more of your natural teeth.
  • Having good health, no severe health conditions, or infections.
  • Having healthy and strong teeth and good bone structure to successfully support the bridge.
  • You have good overall oral health.
  • You understand you need to practice good oral hygiene to maintain the condition of the dental bridge.

Exceptional Dentistry will discuss all factors with you before deciding whether a bridge is beneficial for your solution.

The Benefits and Advantages of a Dental Bridge

Dental bridges can provide a variety of benefits, including:

  • They will restore a natural and healthy appearance to your mouth and smile.
  • They will restore your ability to talk and speak normally, as missing teeth impacts proper enunciation.
  • You will maintain a healthy facial structure by preventing jawbone loss at the site of the missing tooth.
  • A dental bridge will restore the ability to chew food efficiently.
  • The dental bridge will prevent the adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap, which will create problems with your bite alignment and cause other complications.

The Different Types of Dental Bridges

There are four main versions of dental bridges:

  • Traditional dental bridge- A traditional dental bridge is a pontic suspended in place with dental crowns that have been placed over the two abutment teeth. A traditional bridge is the most common version of dental bridge used when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap.
  • Maryland dental bridge- Like a traditional bridge, the Maryland dental bridge still uses two natural abutment teeth on both sides of the space. Instead of placing crowns on the abutment teeth, a Maryland bridge uses a framework of metal or porcelain that is cemented onto the backs of the two abutment teeth.
  • Cantilever dental bridge- Also like a traditional bridge, the pontic in a cantilever dental bridge is secured by a single crown that is cemented to only one abutment tooth. You need just one natural tooth next to the gap.
  • Implant-supported dental bridge- Implant-supported bridges rely on dental implants for support as opposed to crowns or frameworks. One implant is usually placed surgically for every missing tooth, and these implants secure the bridge in place. If an implant for each missing tooth is not possible, the dental bridge could have a pontic suspended between two implant-supported crowns.

This is considered the strongest and most stable restoration. An implant-supported bridge usually requires two visits, the first to surgically place the implants in the jawbone and a second to place the bridge. It may take several months for this treatment to be finished.

The Dental Bridge Process

The procedure of having a dental bridge placed can be completed in a few simple steps. The first step is preparing the adjoining teeth to support the bridge. The second step is making a physical or digital impression of the teeth and your arch so that the dental lab can fabricate the bridge.

The physical impression, or the digital scan, will be sent to the dental lab, and once designed the new bridge will be ready for final placement at Exceptional Dentistry. The bridge will be positioned first to make sure it is the proper shape, size, color, and texture. We then adhere the new bridge to the abutment teeth using bonding cement. This cement is final, so when the bridge is finally placed, it becomes a permanent restoration.

Aftercare

It is important to properly care for your new dental bridge in the same way you would care for your natural teeth. If they are not cared for correctly, dental bridges will cause irritation, infection and can even cause decay to your natural teeth. It is essential to keep your regular dental appointments following the placement of your dental bridge.
