• Uncomfortable Toothaches- Toothache pain can be intense. Tooth pain can be from an infection, a dental abscess, or decay that has annoyed the nerves in your tooth. If the tooth pain does not diminish, you should consider it a dental emergency. Call Exceptional Dentistry immediately.
• A Knocked-Out Tooth- Having a tooth knocked out is distressing. Call us immediately. If Exceptional Dentistry can see you within an hour, there is a reasonable chance we can re-insert the tooth and save it. Pick up the tooth by the crown, place under clean, cold water, and do not dry it. Place it back into the socket, and bite down gently to hold it in place. If you cannot get it back into the socket, put it in a glass of milk. Our emergency treatment will clean the socket, and then re-insert the tooth in its socket. We might use a splint to hold it in place. The tooth will fuse with the jawbone, making it stable once again.
• A Broken or Cracked Tooth- If you chip or break a tooth it is best to see Exceptional Dentistry soon. The sooner we can treat you, we might be able to reattach the broken piece. Save the piece of the tooth and rinse it in warm water. Put it in a glass of milk and bring it to your appointment. If you have pain, reduce it by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also hold an ice pack against your cheek. If you are bleeding, bite down on gauze to stop the bleeding.
• A Lost or Damaged Filling- If you chip or crack a dental filling and do not have pain, you can call Exceptional Dentistry to schedule an appointment. If you completely lose a filling, place some sugar-free gum in the hole. We can replace the filling within a few days. If there is pain, call us so we can place a new filling promptly.
• A Dental Abscess- This is an infection that occurs around a tooth root. It can cause serious pain and can be harmful if it spreads into the jawbone. It is important to get prompt treatment for a dental abscess to reduce the risk of spreading infection. If you have severe pain or a fever, call us immediately. Like a toothache, you can use cold compresses, salt-water rinses, and focus on soft food. Abscesses often require a root canal procedure. If the tooth is infected, extraction might be necessary.
• A Lost Crown- A lost crown is considered an emergency dentistry situation, but you can wait a few days for treatment. You can place clove oil on the tooth to avoid soreness. You can put denture glue on the tooth and put the crown back on. Do not use super glue. If you cannot get the crown back on the tooth, keep it in a plastic bag until you see us.
• Loose Braces Brackets- A loose braces bracket is not an emergency dentistry issue, but it is still a reason to see Exceptional Dentistry soon. You can use an orthodontic wax to hold the loose bracket in place. If an arch wire breaks off, this is also an emergency that can also wait a day or two. Use a small pencil eraser on the end to keep the wire from poking you or bend it back against your teeth. Never cut the wire!
• An Oral Injury- If you have experienced an injury that results in bleeding, you should now visit the emergency room. The ER staff will suture any external cuts and then refer you to an emergency dentist for oral injuries. Until you reach the emergency room, control the bleeding by applying pressure on the area with a cold compress. Rinse your mouth with cold water to control the bleeding.
