at Exceptional Dentistry

A tooth extraction is when a natural tooth must be removed from its socket. Tooth extractions are conducted for a number of reasons, but usually because the tooth cannot be saved because of dental trauma, damaging tooth decay, or periodontal disease. An impacted wisdom tooth can develop an infection and then needs to be removed. In orthodontics treatments, the teeth can be crowded, and a healthy tooth might need be extracted to create enough room for the remainder of the teeth to be straightened.

Most Americans over 65 still have the majority of their natural teeth. With the new advances in dental technology, there are many ways of keeping your teeth both clean and free of decay. Still, no matter how diligent we are, our teeth can still become damaged, infected, and must be treated.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

We can usually repair and restore a tooth that is broken or damaged with a filling, crown, or another treatment. Sometimes the damage is just too severe to repair, and Exceptional Dentistry must recommend a tooth extraction.

Here are some common reasons making a tooth extraction necessary:

  • Trauma or an Injury- Accidents will happen and involving a tooth can certainly be painful. Exceptional Dentistry can repair a damaged tooth by placing a filling in the fracture caused by the trauma. The crack must be filled to prevent infection from spreading. If a filling does not work, we might suggest a dental crown, which will both cover and protect the entire tooth. If neither of these options prevent decay from spreading, we will have to extract the tooth to prevent any further oral health issues.
  • Decay or infection- In the middle of every natural tooth, there is soft pulp tissue that is full of nerves and blood vessels. When decay enters the pulp of a damaged tooth, the pulp becomes infected. Infected pulp can cause painful toothaches. Our team will first perform root canal therapy to save the tooth prior to a tooth extraction.
  • Gum Disease- A leading cause for natural tooth loss is periodontal disease. Gum disease will cause the gums to detach from your teeth from the plaque built up along the gum line. Sagging pockets develop when the gums pull away from the teeth and the infection progresses. Your gums become swollen, red and will bleed often. If left untreated, the connectivity tissue that secures your teeth will lose its grip. Your teeth will loosen up and your team at Exceptional Dentistry may have no choice but to perform a tooth extraction.
  • Lack of Space- Successful orthodontic treatment might require a tooth extraction to create space for the teeth to move into their desired positions.
  • Wisdom Teeth- Wisdom teeth usually erupt naturally in our late teens or early twenties. Often times wisdom teeth erupt crooked resulting in misalignment. Exceptional Dentistry quite often removes wisdom teeth. Whether they have erupted or remain impacted under the gum line, we can remove them simply or surgically.

Preparation for a Tooth Extraction

Before extracting a tooth, Exceptional Dentistry will first review your medical and dental history and take necessary X-rays. X-rays will clarify the shape, position, and length of the tooth and the surrounding bone. This information helps us determine the best way to extract the tooth.

When starting a simple tooth extraction, we first numb the immediate area around your tooth with a local anesthetic. During a surgical extraction we may find it beneficial to add some dental sedation, which could range from conscious sedation to general anesthesia.

The Two Types of Tooth Extraction Procedures

  • A Simple Procedure- After the local anesthetic has numbed the immediate area, we simply loosen the tooth and lift it up and out of the socket with a dental tool called an elevator. This extraction is when the tooth is above the gum line and easy to access.
  • Surgical Procedure- A surgical extraction is a little more involved as it now requires an incision into the gum line to retrieve the tooth. This extraction method is necessary for an impacted wisdom tooth or if a tooth is broken below your gum line. A local anesthetic will eliminate any discomfort during this extraction. We can always discuss adding dental sedation if anxiety is an issue.
