The Dental Veneer Procedure

There are three stages of the porcelain veneer process: the initial consultation, the preparation, and the placement.

  • The Consultation- To confirm that porcelain veneers will indeed benefit you, you will start with an evaluation appointment with Exceptional Dentistry. By sharing and discussing your goals and health objectives first will help us determine if porcelain veneers are appropriate. If agreed upon and confirmed, we will review the veneer options and color shades.
  • Preparation Phase- At your preparation appointment, we begin by making room for the veneers to be placed over the teeth to be restored. To do this we will remove a thin layer of the surface enamel. This procedure is painless, but we can offer you anesthesia if you are feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Next, your Exceptional Dentistry team will take an impression of your teeth to use as a model to create the veneers. We will also select the appropriate shade of porcelain to either match adjoining teeth or your preferred color if we are correcting discoloration. Your veneers will now be custom created at the dental lab.
  • Placement- The final appointment is the prize. Your veneers are now ready for placement, and you will leave with a restored, healthy smile. First, we confirm the veneers match the color and shape desired. We might need to slightly trim before the bonding begins if they need modification. Upon approval, we will prepare your teeth by performing a general cleaning, polishing, and etching. Etching is the process of roughing up the front surface by using an abrasive dental liquid so the veneers will adhere to the teeth. Finally, a bonding cement is applied before placing the veneers on the teeth. If the cement needs assistance in drying, a special light will be used to quicken the drying process. When the cement has cured, your new veneers are finished.

Different Versions of Veneers Available

There are a few types of veneers available to restore your healthy smile. Exceptional Dentistry will review your options during your consultation appointment to reiterate we make the best choice for your lifestyle:

  • Porcelain- The most popular type of veneer, porcelain is durable and long-lasting. Ceramic layers are a combination of enamel and dentin to resemble a natural look. There will be a slight reduction in your natural tooth size with this method.
  • Composite- If you are looking for a more affordable solution, composite veneers can be a viable option. There will be extraordinarily little to no preparation needed before placing this restoration. Composite veneers can be equally effective in correcting dental concerns. They usually do not last as long as porcelain, requiring replacement in five to ten years.
  • Prepless- This option requires no reduction with the natural tooth surface before the placement. Prepless veneer shells are extremely thin porcelain pieces that adhere to the surface of the tooth just like traditional porcelain veneers. These might not be the right option if you are correcting several dental issues.
  • Minimal Prep- Minimal prep veneers can be placed with truly little preparation to the teeth. A small amount of the surface of the tooth is still removed before the veneers are placed, which allows you the option of keeping more of your natural tooth in comparison to traditional porcelain veneers.

The Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are often used to correct, improve, or restore:

  • Teeth that are broken, chipped, or cracked.
  • Stains from tetracycline or other medications.
  • Large dental fillings.
  • Excessive fluoride treatment staining.
  • To close unsightly gaps between teeth.
  • Teeth that have experienced excessive wear.
  • Teeth that are uneven, misaligned, or irregularly shaped.
